Even among seasoned wine enthusiasts, the northern Spanish DO of Getaria Txakolina remains a hidden gem. Tucked along the Basque coastline, it’s known for crisp, vibrant wines made from rare, native grape varieties. With naturally low alcohol and bright, zesty acidity, these wines are perfect for pairing with the region’s outstanding seafood. Most bottles are consumed locally, rarely venturing far from their coastal birthplace.

The region’s winemaking roots run deep, with the Tueka-Etxaniz family recognised as its oldest producers. Since 1649, they’ve cultivated breath-taking hillside vineyards that roll towards the Bay of Biscay. Today, their legacy continues as a tightly knit family business - 13 of the 16 team members are relatives - preserving centuries-old traditions with quiet pride.

In the cool, misty climate of Getaria, Ondarrabi Zuri and Ondarrabi Beltza vines are trained high to maximise airflow and reduce disease pressure. The wines remain on their lees until bottling, retaining a light natural spritz that adds to their charm. Locals honour the tradition of serving Txakoli with flair, pouring from height through an escanciador to release its signature effervescence and awaken its vivid character.
