Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt 17 Year Old Whisky 70cl 43% ABV
This is a rich and well-balanced blended malt, with all the flavours you'd hope for - spice, sweetness and incredible Japanese fruitiness. Taketsuru 17 Years Old’s mellow, well-rounded nose and palate are sure to please. A multi-award winning whisky for a reason.
With a larger proportion of malts aged in sherry casks, the drier Taketsuru 17 Year Old presents the seasoned whisky drinker with sophisticated, mature aromas of dried fruits, leather and tobacco spice. With its stunning complexity, it’s no wonder this bottling was voted the world’s best blended malt whisky in 2012, 2014 and 2015 at the World Whisky Awards. "The strength of this whisky lies in the way the subtle aroma of peat builds up over time," says world-renowned British whisky critic Jim Murray.
On the nose it is complex, with an almost Irish-whiskey fresh fruitiness - tropical fruit salad, red berries, cherries and baked apples. Woody spice, and darker notes of leather, dried fruit and smoky tea sit at the back with balancing sweet vanilla.
In the mouth, the vanilla comes to the front, but sweetness is tempered by oak spices - cinnamon, clove and nutmeg, and a hint of wood smoke. The fruit is more restrained than the nose, with dried and baked fruit notes providing a rich backbone. Dry oaky spice quickly gives way to orchard fruit and lingering sweetness.
