MMM Macho Man Monastrell, Jumilla, Casa Rojo 75cl 14% ABV
MMM - Macho Man Monastrell is a red oak Jumilla, fruity, balanced, round and with a long finish, is the perfect choice to pair any gastronomic celebration with friends. A red wine made from Monastrell grape vineyards of La Raja, between the mountains of the stack and the Carche in Jumilla wine area. The delicate Monastrell grape vintage is manually harvested in small boxes, with traditional winemaking and 5 months aging in French oak barrels. Beautiful red in colour with violet hues typical of the Monastrell variety. On the nose it is fruity with toasted nuances provided by the short time in oak. In the mouth a balanced acidity, with ripe tannins that make for a fruity long finish.
The red grape Monastrell is otherwise known as Mataró or Mourvèdre and can be found many regions around the world including the Rhône and Provence regions of France, the Valencia and Jumilla denominations of Spain, California and Washington State and the Australian regions of South Australia and New South Wales, as well as South Africa. In addition to making red varietal wines, Mourvèdre is a prominent component in "GSM" (Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre) blends. The variety is also used to make rosé and port-style fortified wines.
Mourvèdre tends to produce tannic wines that can be high in alcohol. The style of wine produced from the grapes varies greatly according to where it is produced, but according to wine expert Jancis Robinson, Mourvèdre wines often have wild game, or earthy notes to them, with soft red fruit flavours. According to wine expert Oz Clarke, young Mourvèdre can come across as faulted due to the reductive, sulphur notes and "farmyard-y" flavours that some wines can exhibit before those flavours mellow with age.
The variety can be a difficult grape to grow, but the rewards for the diligent winemaker are great.
