Domaine Jean-Jacques Girard Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Rouvrettes, Burgundy, France

The Girards are one of the oldest winemaking families in the village of Savigny-Les-Beaune and produce gloriously aromatic, fruity Savigny. Jean-Jacques and his son Vincent use a combination of modern and traditional techniques to produce wines of great purity and elegance. The reds are delicious, accessible wines which are fantastic for drinking when young but also have great potential for ageing.

The 1er Cru Rouvrettes represents very good value in an otherwise expensive area to shop around in. The tannins and acidity are very much present, yet restrained. The balance of fruit, spice and sous-bois characters is what really sets the wine apart from its peers. The wine is neither shy, nor showy with its strawberry and damson fruit, and there is a subtle amount of both savoury and sweet spice from the wood. With five plus years maturity, there are also notes of forest floor and mushroom beginning to emerge, but the fruit and freshness still shine above.
