This is the original Tennessee whiskey from the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. It has been made here since 1875, founded by Jasper Newton Daniel. The spirit uses a mash of mostly corn, with some rye and malted barley. Before ageing, it is mellowed through ten feet of sugar-maple charcoal. This Lincoln County Process gives it a smooth, gently smoky character. It is this step, not bourbon rules, that defines it as a Tennessee whiskey.
- The nose is light and sweet, with dry spice, oily nuts and a wisp of smoke.
- Smooth and soft on the palate, offering banana, mixed nuts and gentle caramel.
- The finish is sweet and cereal-like, rounded off with toasty oak.
Drink it neat, over ice, or lengthened with cola for an easy highball. It pairs well with barbecue ribs, burgers or smoky pulled pork.
