Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2017 75cl
Boekenhoutskloof Syrah, Swartland, South Africa
Boekenhoutskloof is one of the 25 first growth estates listed by lead Cape Wine critic Tim Atkin MW, and has twice been named winery of the year in Platter's WIne Guide. The name means “ravine of the Boekenhout” (pronounced Book-n-Howed). A Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for furniture making – hence the 7 chairs on the labels. Each of the chairs on the label pay tribute to the skills of the 18th century craftsmen, and their achievements in creating beauty from natural sources, just like the pursuit of fine wine-making.
Fruit for the Boekenhoutskloof Syrah is sourced from two sites in the Swartland - Porseleinberg and Goldmine. Both exhibit the unmistakable character of decomposed granite and create wines with a distinct freshness, spiciness and structure.
Boekenhoutskloof Syrah has intense aromas of mulberry, dark plum, blackberry, liquorice and violets. The same dark fruits follow through onto the palate, with an added eathiness and spice notes of black cardamom, sweet tobacco and clove. A full-bodied yet elegant Syrah with fine-grained tannins, and a complex array of cured meat, white pepper, black olives and coffee emerging on the silky finish.
