Bizarra Extravaganza Amphora Tannat Natural Wine, Canelones, Uruguay

Canelones is the epicentre of the Uruguayan wine industry. Running from the north-west of the capital Montevideo, the area runs in an arc to the Atlantic coast east of the city. The flat, low-lying vineyards, so atypical of South America, are densely planted and responsible for around 60% of the total wine production of Uruguay.

Juanico is one of the leading family-owned wineries in Uruguay. Vines have been planted on San Jose farm since the 1830s. The Deicas family acquired the site in 1979. They use the principles of sustainable farming, avoiding the use of chemicals where possible to ensure a natural balance in the ecosystem and reduce human intervention.

For this wine, they follow the ancient technique of fermenting in clay amphorae, which naturally retains a constant, cool temperature. Only ambient yeast already on the grape skins is used.

This amphora Tannat has dynamic dark berry fruit with prominent notes of chocolate. A wonderfully pure and accessible style of natural wine.

Try with beef stew, cassoulet, roasted lamb or duck confit, or aged cheeses.
