Porseleinberg Syrah 2019
Porseleinberg is one of the most well regarded wines to come out of South Africa. It is the result of Boekenhoutskloof and Chocolate Block winemaker Marc Kent searching for the best Syrah grapes, a journey that inevitably took him to the Swartland. It was here that he found an isolated and windswept wine farm perched atop the Porseleinberg mountain, now recognised as one of the greatest Syrah vineyards in the world. In 2009, Marc hired legendary viticulturalist Callie Louw to manage and develop the property. They focus on one wine, and the quality gets better with every vintage. The label is printed using an original Heidelberg letter press.
2019 is the second vintage using the submerged cap technique for this wine. Maturation took place over 12 months in 90% foudre and 10% concrete egg.
Charming red and black berry fruit enveloped by savoury yet supple tannin. But if you allow this wine to be decanted for several hours, more interesting notes of black olive tapenade, wild herbs, grilled meat and schistous minerality will emerge.
