Catena Zapata Mendoza Blend 2016
The inaugural 1997 vintage of this cabernet sauvignon and malbec blend set a new standard of quality for wines from South America when it won a series of blind tastings against first growths and other prestigious cuvees from around the world.
- An Argentinian wine with dark fruit aromas on the nose with delicate traces of vanilla and mocha
- Rich and lush on the palate
- Concentrated black cherry and red currant fruit flavours layered with sweet spices, tobacco and a touch of leather
- The red wine presents a finish of soft, supple tannins with bright, crisp acidity and a flinty minerality which gives the wine exceptional length.
Firstly the Catena Zapata Mendoza Blend 2016 is harvested by hand, and some parcels are fermented as whole bunches to enhance tannic structure and freshness. Secondly the juice is fermented for 20 days. Thirdly fermented in oak barrels, concrete and stainless-steel tanks, at 26-28ºC for 10-15 days. The post-fermentative maceration lasts between 5 and 10 days.
Finally the wine carries out its malolactic fermentation, then aged in French oak barrels for 18 months. As a result producing a luxury cuvee.
Catena is a name synonymous with Argentinian wine. In 1902 original founder Nicola Catena, planted his first malbec vineyard. Resulting in the development of fine wine production.
Nicolas Catena, grandson of Nicola, has pioneered planting at high altitude with many of the vineyards located at c. 5,000ft. This cool and arid climate in the foothills of the Andes is perfect for single vineyard Malbec’s, Cabernet and Chardonnay.
