Mollydooker The Boxer Shiraz, McLaren Vale, Australia

'Mollydooker' is old Aussie slang for a left-hander. Indeed their whole approach is wonderfully unorthodox. In the vineyard, they employ a rigorous water program that stresses the vines out enough that they don't overproduce but enables them to conserve just enough energy to ripen the optimum number of bunches of grapes. During harvest, they then wait longer than usual till the grapes reach the 'sweet spot' between acidity and residual sugar. The result is high-alcohol, full-bodied wines that really pack a punch but also finish fresh and velvety smooth.

Fruit for Mollydooker The Boser Shiraz comes from McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. The clue is in the name here; the wine punches well above its Fruit Weight, and did you notice the boxer has two left-handed gloves?

This alluring and unashamedly bold Shiraz has characters of spiced plums, blackberry jam, and cherry all at the fore and finishes with coffee cream, licorice and vanilla. Full-bodied with vibrant berry fruit characteristics, yet elegant with restrained tannins, resulting in a soft mouthfeel. Consistently impressive and seriously good, this wine is not short of character.

For all their reds, Mollydooker recommends the Mollydooker shake when the wine is less than 2 years old. This is because the wine is preserved with nitrogen during bottling, which can also suppress aroma and flavour until released from the wine. Pour a small amount into a glass to create some room in the bottle. Reseal with the screw cap. Invert the bottle and shake well for 5 seconds. Open again to allow the nitrogen bubbles to escape. Repeat 2 or 3 times. Then pour yourself a proper glass and enjoy!
