Klein Constantia Vin de Constance 2011 50cl 14% abv
"Klein Constantia was bought by European courts in the 18th and 19th Centuries in preference to Yquem, Tokay, Madeira..." - Hugh Johnson
Klein Constantia's Vin de Constance has "over 300 years of history in every bottle", garnering attention from Kings and famous writers throughout Europe over the 18th and 19th centuries - Napoleon, Bismark, Jane Austen and Charels Dickens to name a few.
Production of the famous dessert wine came to an end towards the end of the 19th century, following the outbreak of the dreaded Phylloxera louse, which killed vines all over the world.
After 100 years of old bottles laying forgotten in the cellars of Europe's great wine collectors, the Klein Constantia estate took on the challenge to bring back the famous sweet Constantia wine, using fruit from the very same vineyards.
1986 marked the wine's re-release, and several vintages since have ranked among the world's best wines in the lists of the likes of Decanter and Wine Spectator.
The 2011 vintage is wonderfully bright on both the nose and palate. Concentrated flavours of apricot and orange zest with aspects of frangipani flowers abound. Mouth filling yet clean and focussed, the wine tapers into a rich luscious finish.
