Gran Enemigo Red Blend, Mendoza, Argentina
El Enemigo is the brainchild of Adrianna Catena and Alejandro Vigil.
Adrianna, who holds both a Masters and a PhD from the University of Oxford, is the youngest daughter of Nicolas Catena Zapata. Today, she blends her experience in Academia with her passion for Viticulture and Winemaking, dividing her time between El Enemigo Wines and Catena Zapata.
Alejandro Vigil, on the other hand, is the rebel in his family. He left school at the age of 14 to join a wine co-operative, only to later graduate top of his class in agricultural engineering and become the head of the soils division for the National Research Institute (INTA). He found his calling early as an agronomist and has been the Chief Winemaker for Bodega Catena Zapata since 2002. He became the first South American to receive a 100pt score.
Gran Enemigo is one of the finest examples of a Bordeaux style blend from Argentina. It comprises Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Gualtallary, Tupungato, and a small amount of Petit Verdot from Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo. The grapes are harvested in five different tries, spread across a month and a half. The wine is fermented in old French oak barrels, a third of which is whole bunch fermented, and matured for 15 months in 100 year old oak foudres.
The wine has alluring notes of chocolate, summer berries, ripe plums, tobacco, cloves and menthol. A full-bodied wine on the palate, with added blackberry and vanilla, and beautifully soft tannin.
A great match for rich red meat dishes.
