A boutique 32-hectare estate located in the northern corner of Margaret River, Deep Woods Estate is ranked as a 5 red star winery by James Halliday, and hailed by Matthew Jukes as one of the great new finds of Margaret River.
Following the arrival of Julian Langworthy, head winemaker, in 2011, accolades have been flooding in with over 60 Gold Medals and 15 Trophies, including Australian winemaker of the year in 2019. Deep Woods has quickly established itself as one of the most sought-after estates in Australia for Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, with scores regularly hitting 97+ points with the critics.
For the Estate Reserve Chardonnay, Julian takes a minimalist approach in the winery, including whole-bunch pressing, wild yeast fermentation, and sparing lees stirring. The individual parcels of fruit from different vineyards in Wilyabrup undergo lees ageing separately before the final wine is blended for bottling.
The Wine has an immediately alluring aroma of flinty reduction, freshly-baked brioche, and oyster shells, opening up to kaffir lime leaf, white peach, citrus blossom and jasmine.
The palate is both powerful and balanced. The citrus and stone fruit flavour profile is remarkably juicy, accompanied by grilled almonds, and balanced by tantalising acidity and minerality.
