La Grande Annee is Bollinger’s prestige blend, produced only in the best vintage years. This is a stunning Jeroboam presented in a Wooden Gift Case.
The 2005 is an exceptional Champagne. The nose displays generous flavours of caramelised apple and hazelnut with complexity of cinnamon and dried flower aromas. The palate is broad, with a creamy texture from the oak fermentation and fine, delicate mousse. In the mouth, a mature, supple and full wine with a long finish.
La Grand Annee are classic and complex Pinot Noir dominated Champagnes, powerful yet refined with the ability to age beautifully. They are produced only when a harvest reaches a perfect balance. It is Bollinger's interpretation of an exceptional year, whose virtues deserve to be brought to the fore, and whose quality ensures the continued production of the house's outstanding prestige vintages. Wines of exceptional quality are therefore needed from the outset: grapes used in making La Grande Annee vintages come from 100% Grands and Premiers Crus and are vinified to reveal a harmonious blend which portrays the characteristics of a remarkable viticultural year.
First fermentation is in 100% small aged old oak barrels, followed by 6 years ageing on its lees with manual riddling prior to disgorgement. After bottling, the second fermentation and cellar ageing are conducted under natural cork in order to protect them as much as possible from oxidation and preserve their freshness, as well as the bouquet and clarity of their aromas.
La Grande Annee develops a majestic vinosity, and intense, rich complex aromas, whose tonality varies according to the nature of each vintage.
In 1976, Bollinger Vintage was re-named Grande Année. Then in 1997, it became La Grande Année - 'The Great Year' - a name simple enough to illustrate its exceptional status, because only truly extraordinary years become vintage at Bollinger.
