Vineyards used to produce this wine are in Stellenbosch and are relatively sheltered with a fairly warm climate. Franshhoek town was originally named 'Oliphants Hoek' which meants Elephant's Corner. After the herds of elephants who roamed the valleys and mountains of the area.
At one time, the main road leaving the area was an elephant trail which they used to move from their summer to winter pastures. Because of this, the elephant is a much loved symbol in the Franschhoek Valley.
